Nioly & Chris were married at 501 Union in Brooklyn, New York one year ago today. Being a Brooklyn girl to my heart, 501 Union is one of my favorite wedding venues, so it was a dream to help these two love birds plan their intimate wedding at this modern, Brooklyn gem. It was love at first sight for them when we visited the venue. 501 Union was exactly what they envisioned for the small gathering of 85 of their closest friends and family.
How It Started
Nioly & Chris found me after I planned one of their friends from college wedding the year before. We had an immediate connection. Nioly was so sweet and bubbly. It was clear she had a vision for her wedding day. Chris was so nice and had an easygoing personality. I could see why they were together. They brought out the best in each other.
From the very beginning, they made it clear they didn’t want a traditional wedding. They had two must-haves for their wedding: They had to have Caribbean cuisine and they wanted to keep their guest list to under 100 people. With these perimeters set, we immediately started looking for the perfect venue and the perfect caterer for their wedding.
501 Union was the perfect venue to host their intimate wedding. They loved the moody and modern feeling at 501 Union. We visited a couple of venues and even took a trip to Miami but 501 Union won their hearts.
Once the venue was secured, it was time to find the perfect caterer. This process took a couple of tries but we found the right one. I called on one of my favorite private chefs, The Fab Experience to provide her culinary creativity for their wedding menu. After their private tasting in their home, they fell in love immediately. Once these two major decisions were made, we hit the ground running and planned the wedding they always wanted.
The wedding ceremony took place in the beautiful atrium at 501 Union. Keeping the intimate and minimalist feel, we let the green wall be the backdrop for them to exchange their vows. Nioly & Chris’s faith was essential to them. The ceremony had to be performed by the pastor of their home church. This made the ceremony so special and personal to not just them but their families as well.
After the ceremony was over, guests enjoyed cocktails and delicious butler passed hors d’oeuvres while the bride and groom along with their family took pictures. Once the pictures were all done, it was time to get the fun started. The reception space was designed in a U Shape table formation to give the room more intimacy. The goal was for the night to feel like a big family dinner. And that’s exactly what it felt like while the guests sang along to R&B classics, and gave heartfelt speeches while they enjoyed their dinner.
To make sure every guest felt special at their wedding, we added each guest’s name to their menu as their seating card. At the end of the night, everyone wanted to take their menu home with them because it was special to them.
The dinner was personal to the bride and groom. The groom’s family was from Antigua and the bride’s family was from Costa Rica. Having authentic Caribbean food was their number one request. The Fab Experience did not disappoint. Guests enjoyed a modern spin on come Caribbean classics like braised jerk short ribs along side Arroz Gondules and fried plantain.
My Favorite Details
My favorite detail of Nioly & Chris’s intimate wedding was the details. I loved the color combination of the emerald green chargers, the black velvet linen, and the copper-colored menu and flatware. This color combination was fabulous and looked amazing with the centerpieces I designed with greenery and complimenting florals.
Thank you and Happy Anniversary to Nioly & Chris
Thank you to the entire vendor team that made their intimate Brooklyn wedding so Fabulous!
